It’s ugly as hell. Not pictured: the grille, which is even uglier. It does seem lower and wider, so maybe it’s more grounded to the ground, I guess?

Can’t wait for the hyperbolic commercials, they will be comparing this to a Ferrari.

We already have the “aggressively sophisticated” Highlander ad, along with “sporty” Camry and “stylish” Corolla. I suppose in an age of alternative facts, it works.

That is...not what I was expecting. Even the new Accord looks better.

Ugh. Those ads send me into even more of a rage fit then Chevy’s Real People ads, tbh.

What struck me about this car is that there seemed to be no coherent design theme at all. Soft curves here, sharp edges there, and a grille that makes the Lexus Predator maw look understated.

Get used to it, they’ll sell millions of them.

They could style it like a literal dog turd, and it would sell, so long as the emblem said “Camry”.

Styling wise, I think we are in 1958 again, the year of gimmickry and gingerbread. Lots of overdone stuff out there.

To be nice, the new Camry ditches the insane DLO fail of the prior/current model, that’s worth something.

I seem to be in the minority here, but from the few pictures I’ve seen, I kinda like the look of the Accord. It’s derivative, but the Accord has almost always been derivative. I wish it actually was a lift back though.

To be fair, the rear end looks lower and wider than the last couple of generations. One of the most infuriating things about the Camry is the way it nose dives under braking. Following one on the highway is nerve wracking because every tap of the brakes looks like a panic stop. Hopefully they fixed that.

True about the turd.

Styling is over the top these days. I look forward to it being toned down a bit. But hope they don’t overshoot and all come out with bars of soap.

Yeah, I kinda like it too. It’s not quite the clean look of the early 9th gen, but it’s much better than the awful facelift they gave it in 2015. Of course, around these parts, Honda could cure cancer and people would still complain.

Kinja'd!!! fintail > WilliamsSW

You can buy that for the price of an unexciting new car.

That design in modern times would have a gigantic underbite and a beltline like a tank - not to mention lots of slashes and creases and gimmicks.

I actually passed it originally, and was going to post this without a picture and say ‘no pictures, you’re welcome’. But then it passed me, and like a car crash, I couldn’t resist gawking.

If the mods request it, I’ll add a safety image and warning.

Yeah- the jury is out until I see it in person, but I really like the fastback look as long as they don’t screw up the rear end proportions (looking at you, BMW 3GT/5GT).

Not a fan of the C shaped lights that Honda and Volvo seem to be infatuated with, but I don’t hate them.

Haha no safety image needed. Some people seem to like it actually. I’ll admit owning a Camry version at one point (ES300/5MT woo!) and actually getting my dads XV40 even though I don’t like Camry’s in general. But yeah I’ll read posts without SR20 but the photo makes it so much better.

You could buy an unexciting Lexus or BMW for the price of that, really.

The underbite and high belt lines are driven by regulations - but those regs gave us colonnade coupes and hideous bumpers in the 70s that eventually went away too.

I could load up a Camcord to the price of a nice enough GTO, no doubt. But you’d need to live in a gentle climate to use it as a DD.

I thing regs might be stronger now, and designers less creative.

I miss it Unfortunately it had a weird slate of issues that made me part with it. Unlike the Camry, it had a hydraulic fan. I was having overheating isssues. Shop found a leaky rack. Replaced the rack because it shared fluid with the system that drove the fan. Still overheated. Blown head gaskets. Fuck it I’m out. Bought a lowered S10. Total 180.

That one looks halfway decent - helped by the color - although there is still something off to me around the C pillar. There seems to be a weird mix of organic curves and sharp angles on the car - especially the LE.

The grille on the LE is truly an abomination. I couldn’t get a picture of it driving, but it’s very different from the picture you posted.

Kinja'd!!! WilliamsSW > fintail
07/15/2017 at 00:06

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah that’s not suitable as a DD for me. I drive 40 miles round trip on Chicago expressways. Nope!

The regs are stronger now, but I remember the mid 70s, and convertibles were dying, giant pillars were showing up along with choked out engines, etc. Etc— but they engineered their way out of it eventually. Creativity is a whole different issue though...

I thought the LE looked okay but not nearly as good as the XLE. It just already looks so sporty that I thought the XSE was over the top when adding sport on top of sport.

You’d have decent rust during the first winter, no doubt.

Tech overcame the emissions and bumper regs of the old days. I don’t know how much can be done about today’s safety regs. The days of sleek front profiles and big greenhouses are past us, I fear.

Yeah, the only thing I don’t like about the new Accord is that weird thing behind the quarter windows that doesn’t match the rest of the car. I’m excited about being able to get the 2.0T and a manual as well, although I imagine the 2.0T will be the same ~280 HP tune the Avancier has.

I see what you mean about the rear quarter trim. It doesn’t work, but it’s not a deal breaker for me.

Car and Driver says 252 Hp for the 2.0. Not bad, but I hope you’re right about 280. That would be really nice.

Kinja'd!!! interstate366, now In The Industry > WilliamsSW
07/15/2017 at 10:33

Kinja'd!!!1

Yeah, it’s not the worst thing in the world. And the 2.0 will probably be easily tunable to get at least 280 if they don’t offer it right out of the box. Unless they’re doing with it like they’ve done with the K24 over the years and only put VTEC on one cam so as to not step on the toes of a more expensive car.
